Fine-Needle Thyroid Nodule Biopsy

If you have a lump or growth on the thyroid gland known as a nodule, Dr. Alexander Lurie will most likely perform a fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. This form of diagnostic testing involves using a small needle to remove a sample of cells from the nodule. The sample is sent to a lab that utilizes the most up-to-date technology in molecular testing to determine if the nodule is malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous).

The Thyroid Biopsy Procedure

During the minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Lurie uses ultrasound guidance to help him insert a thin needle into the thyroid nodule in the neck. Ultrasound helps ensure accurate placement of the needle. Dr. Lurie then removes a sample of cells to be evaluated under a microscope by a pathologist. He may repeat this procedure several times to obtain additional samples.

The biopsy is performed in our office and only takes approximately 20 minutes. There is no downtime involved in an FNA biopsy and immediately following the procedure, you can resume your normal activities.

We usually receive biopsy results within a few days, although it can take up to two weeks. The accuracy of the test is virtually flawless and, depending on results, can eliminate the need for other tests, including an ultrasound or a thyroid scan. The overwhelming majority of thyroid nodules turn out to be benign.
